Symposium Explores ‘The Promise of Yale Psychiatry’

New Haven, Conn. — A symposium on "The Promise of Yale Psychiatry" will held on Friday, Nov. 13, to mark the installation of Dr. John H. Krystal as the sixth chair of the Department of Psychiatry.

The event is co-sponsored by Yale's psychiatry department and Yale-New Haven Hospital. It will take place 1-5 p.m. in the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall St. It is free and open to the public.

Symposium participants will include Marna Borgstrom, president and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale New Haven Health System; Patricia Rehmer, commissioner of the state's Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services; and Roger Johnson, director of the VA Connecticut Health Care System.

Two Department of Psychiatry alumni who are currently at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine will make scientific presentations. Dr. Dennis Charney, the Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean and professor in Mt. Sinai's Departments of Psychiatry, Neuroscience, and Pharmacology & Systems Therapeutics, will talk about "The Future of Drug Discovery for Depression." Dr. Eric J. Nestler, professor and chair of Mt. Sinai's Department of Neuroscience and director of the Laboratory of Molecular Psychiatry, will discuss "Epigenetic Mechanisms of Depression."

Krystal, the Robert L. McNeil Jr. Professor of Translational Research, will present a lecture titled "Yale Psychiatry — A Vision of the Future."
